Agenda

The core coursework at our Winter Meeting focuses on leadership training.  In 2009, GACVB unveiled its new Leadership Excellence Certification Program (LEC).  The first 22 tourism and travel professionals in Georgia received their LEC designations at the 2011 Governor’s Tourism Conference in Macon.  Each year we continue to offer coursework at our Winter Meeting to enable attendees to reach their LEC designation.

For a full description of the LEC program, click here.

The format of the 2012 meeting will change slightly since we have now completed the third full year of LEC training.  The Winter Meeting includes 8 hours of instructional time.  Instead of offering 8 hours of LEC as we have the past 3 years, we will offer 4 hours of LEC and 4 hours of Advanced LEC at the same time.  The other 4 hours of LEC each year will be offered at the annual Governor’s Tourism Conference.  This new format opens up 4 hours of instructional time at the Winter Meeting for our members to control the content.  Content is currently being reviewed and will focus on one of the following areas:  Governance, Finance, Human Resources & Staff Development, Technology, Marketing & Communications, Stakeholder Services & Customers, or Facilities.

Your goal is to create a work environment in which people are empowered, productive, contributing, and happy. Don't stifle them by limiting their tools or information. Trust them to do the right thing. Get out of their way and watch them catch fire. There are 10 basic principles for managing people in a way that reinforces employee empowerment, accomplishment, and contribution. This session will discuss these 10 principles and encourage participants to develop direct reports through empowering assignments and leadership development exercises that result in professional growth and competence. Participants will know the difference between a boss and a leader and will be more enabled to develop others.

Advanced LEC Course - The Art of Influencing Using the DISC Model Part 1
Cypress Room
Shana Young, Assistant Director of the Leadership Institute at the Cunningham Center for Leadership Development, Columbus State University
This session is taking when you learned about yourself through the DISC assessment to the next level. We will use the DISC model as a frame to understand the emotional needs people bring to the workplace. Looking at influence, if I as a leader can create the best possible environment where the people that I interact with can get their emotional needs met, they are less likely to struggle against me and are in a position to want to cooperate. Here's how influence and the DISC concept are connected: if I communicate with people in a way that meets their needs, that influences them to cooperate and work with joint effort rather than struggling with the conflict and stress that you often see in organizations. Participants will understand the importance of influence in today's work environment, explore applications for influence and have to opportunity to work on their influencing skills with different personality types.

Becoming Well-Known as the Tourism Czar in Your Community
Robert Skrob, CPA, Florida Association of CVBs
Wouldn't it be nice if everyone in your community believed you when you talk about the tourism industry? How about creating a "buzz" around everything you do so your community knows about it? If nothing else, how about getting the benefit of the doubt so individuals trust that you have positive intentions and they are eager to help you accomplish your mission? It's all possible, there is a template radio show producers follow when they create new "talent." They create and develop a persona that attracts listeners from their desired demographic for their advertisers. Love them or hate them, today's talk show host celebrities have several things in common. While on their surface, it may appear that Oprah, Dr. Phil, Tony Robbins, John Gray, Howard Stern, Rush Limbaugh, and Regis Philbin are completely different, they are each doing the same things to make themselves into a "star" and "expert" within their target audiences. The each follow the same template, the only difference is their target audiences. By following the template each of these celebrities use, you can generate "celebrity power" for yourself within your own community generating notoriety and more importantly support. This session will reveal for the first time Robert Skrob's "Great 8 Pillars of Creating Crowds of Raving Fans." A personal branding guide Robert created for himself more than 10 years ago to use as a template for every meeting, written report and telephone call. These "Great 8 Pillars" are your way to determine what people say about you when you aren't in the room. They are talking about you, better if they are saying what you want them to say. After this session you'll have the levers at hand to pull to generate increased cooperation from your partners, better recognition of your contribution by elected officials and an improved standing in the visitor origination markets for your community. All of which are essential to your work in bringing more customers to your community.

Your Community Relations Success Plan
Robert Skrob, CPA, Florida Association of CVBs
Our special expert guest and facilitator, Robert Skrob, will choose three attendees to be in the "hot seat" during this session where they will describe their current community environment and challenges. Attendees in the audience facilitated by Mr. Skrob will give input and help those participants in the "hot seat" design a plan of action for the next 6 months. As a participant you'll receive an action plan tailored to you, your organization and your community. To be considered as a participant, send jmusselman@gacvb.com a short description of why your case example would be a terrific challenge and learning opportunity for the conference.

Center for Leadership Development, Columbus State University
Why is it so hard to follow through on time management/priority setting advice? Most programs or books offer tips and advice but gloss over the practical implementation. They say, "Increase your productivity and fill each moment with activity" or "simplify, simplify, simplify". We know everyone is different – some like a fast pace; others like a slower one; some people are night owls; others are at their best in the morning; some people love structure; others thrive on spontaneity and flexibility. In this session we will learn about and use a system created by Julie Morgenstern dubbed "The Queen of putting people's lives in order" by USA Today to develop your big picture view, find out what's holding you back, design a plan that fits your personality, makes choices about & take ownership in your schedule and your life.

Advanced LEC Course - Generational Differences or Generational Similarities in the Workplace Part 1
Cypress Room
Ed Helton, Director of the Leadership Institute at the Cunningham Center for Leadership Development, Columbus State University
By the end of this decade 64 million skilled workers will be able to retire. Is the new work-force different from the retiring workforce? A focus on generational differences presumes that each generation is fundamentally different, thus, leading to frustration and stress, especially in the workplace. The recognition of values that bridge generational gaps, with the context of a healthy organizational culture, can strengthen the organization. Participants will be able to identify generational similarities that transcend generational differences. Participants will gain understanding of the importance of context in discerning generational issues. Participants will appreciate that people from different generations are largely alike in what they think, believe, and want from their work.
